You’ve probably heard the phrase “New York tough,” as it turns out we’re also New York kind (who knew), especially in Buffalo, Rochester, and Yonkers.

A new survey from LuvLink asked 3,000 travelers where they’ve met the kindest locals, and three Empire State cities made the top 150 list for America’s most helpful and warm-hearted residents...Who knew.

Buffalo Brings the Heat (Even in a Snowstorm)

Buffalo came in #12 nationwide and leads the way for New York with its grit and warmth. Buffalo locals don’t just say hi, they’ll give you directions, walk you to the spot, and might even recommend a place to grab wings while you’re at it. It’s that “we’ve survived winter together” thing that brings people closer, and visitors feel it too.

Rochester’s Welcoming Vibes Make the List

Landing at #83, Rochester brings a blend of industry, nature, and culture and they’re happy to show it off. Whether it’s pointing you toward a trail in the Finger Lakes or sharing a bit of local history, Rochester residents make you feel at home, even if you’re just passing through.

Yonkers: The Friendly Face of the Hudson

Yonkers is #89, and if you’ve ever visited, you probably know why. It’s got that mix of big-city energy and small-town charm. Locals will show you the best views of the Hudson and their favorite mom-and-pop restaurant.

More Than Just a Smile

So what kind of kindness are travelers experiencing in these cities? According to the survey:

42% said New Yorkers offered them directions or help
25% were assisted during an emergency or tough moment
17% got invited to local events
16% were offered a ride or personally guided somewhere
That’s not just friendliness. It’s real, memorable, go-out-of-your-way kind of hospitality.

The Return Trip: Kindness That Sticks

85% of travelers said they have gone back to a place just because of the kindness they experienced there. Friendships and memories can turn a random weekend getaway into a regular vacation spot.

My New York Vacation Supports Study Findings That the Empire State is the Best for Road Trips

Wallet Hub recently released study findings on the best road-trip states in America, and New York was found to be #1 overall. The timing of the study was great for me because we were headed on a road trip in New York. I've traveled extensively up and down the east coast but it's been a long time since I took a road trip in the Empire State. We took a trip to the Watkins Glen, Finger Lakes area of New York. We enjoyed vineyards, wineries, breweries, hiking and kayaking, and we did it all in just four days. While on this trip I learned that the Wallet Hub study was right on. The array of experiences, the dramatic landscapes and the hospitality of these small towns all added up to the most enjoyable short vacation my family has ever been on. We visited Watkins Glen, Burdett, Hector and Owego, NY among others, and I strongly recommend emulating my trip.
