Have you ever wanted to see some of the most historic buildings right here in Binghamton? The New York Landmarks Conservancy’s 15th Annual Sacred Sites Open House is happening on May 18th. This is the perfect chance to see some of our area’s most beautiful religious buildings.
What’s the Sacred Sites Open House All About?
Sacred Sites Open House is about discovering the art, architecture, and stories behind New York’s religious buildings. From ancient stained glass windows to intricate carvings, each place has its own charm.
This year’s theme is “Building for Eternity: Religious Architecture and Artisans.” It focuses on the awesome work done by artisans to make these awe-inspiring places of worship. You can take a peek inside some of the most beautiful spots in your town!
Local Churches You Can Explore
Here’s a look at some of the local places participating in the event:
Salvation Temple Church (Binghamton): Sunday, May 18th, 3:00pm–4:00pm. Built in 1899, this church has amazing fan-shaped windows and Romanesque-style architecture.
Centenary-Chenango St. United Methodist Church (Binghamton): Sunday, May 18th, 12:00pm–2:00pm. This church is 109 years old and has gorgeous stained-glass windows, including a awe-inspiring two-story arched window.
Christ Episcopal Church (Binghamton): Sunday, May 18th, 12:00pm–3:00pm. Built in 1853, this church has a beautiful Gothic design and has ties to Binghamton’s history with the Underground Railroad.
The Landmark Church (Binghamton): Sunday, May 18th, 2:00pm–4:00pm. Built in 1866, this church is known for its outstanding stained-glass windows from Munich, Germany.
Saint Michael’s Orthodox Church (Binghamton): Sunday, May 18th, 11:00am–1:00pm. Prepare to be amazed by the beautiful icons that are said to be "windows into heaven."
