If you live in New York and you’ve bought grated cheese recently, the Ambriola Company has issued a recall on several grated Pecorino Romano cheeses after routine testing found Listeria at one of its processing facilities. Some of those products were sold here in New York, both in stores and at deli counters. I know recalls can start to blur together, but this is one worth taking seriously.

Why This Recall Isn’t One to Brush Off

Listeria isn’t just a stomach bug. It can be especially dangerous for pregnant women, older adults, young children, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Even if you’re generally healthy, it can still make you pretty sick. This is very much a “don’t chance it” situation.

No Reported Illnesses, But Stay Alert

Here’s the good news. So far, no illnesses have been reported. That’s a relief. Still, if you’ve eaten any of the recalled cheese and start feeling off, feverish, or just not quite right, it’s a good idea to call your doctor and check in.

How This Recall Reaches Local Grocery Stores

All of the recalled cheese was produced at the same facility in West Caldwell, New Jersey, and shipped nationwide between early and mid-November. That puts New York squarely in the mix, especially when it comes to grocery stores, club stores, and deli counters that sell cheese by weight.

Which Products Are Included in the Recall

Grab your cheese container and compare it with this list. The recall includes specific packages of grated Pecorino Romano. That means Locatelli Pecorino Romano Grated 4-ounce cups with expiration dates of May 3, May 10, and May 17, 2026. It also includes Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano 8-ounce cups with expiration dates of April 6, April 11, April 12, April 15, April 17, May 5, May 6, May 7, May 10, May 12, May 14, and May 17, 2026.

You’ll also want to check for Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano 6-ounce cups with expiration dates of March 4 and March 12, 2026, and Member’s Mark Pecorino Romano 1.5-pound bags dated March 25, March 30, and April 5, 2026.

This Also Applies to Cheese Sold by the Pound

If you bought grated Pecorino Romano by the pound instead of in a package, don’t skip this part. The recall also includes Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano with expiration dates of March 4, March 6, March 11, and March 13, 2026. Also on the list are Ambriola Grated Pecorino Romano sold by the pound, dated February 28, March 4, and March 11, 2026; Pinna Grated Pecorino Romano, dated March 11, 2026, and Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano Grated bags with expiration dates of March 3 and March 12, 2026.

If what you have doesn’t match these products and dates, it’s not part of the recall.

Your Next Step if You Have Recalled Cheese

If you spot one of these in your fridge, don’t eat it. You can throw it away or take it back to the store for a full refund. Most retailers won’t ask for a receipt when a product is recalled, so don't panic if you can't find yours.

Questions? You Can Get Help

If you’re unsure whether your cheese is included or just want confirmation, you can call Ambriola directly at 1-800-962-8224. The customer service line is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time, and they can help you walk through it.
