Study Reveals New York’s Quirky Language Habits
How many times have you, me, or anyone we know, let out an "Ummm," "Likeee," or "Soooo" in the middle of a sentence when we're trying to express ourselves? Admit it, we've all been there.
Recently, Preply decided to check out American speech habits and they find some interesting stuff about New York. The Empire State got the #5 spot for having some of the worst speech habits in the U.S. It looks like we might need to brush up on our speech skills a bit.
Did you know that 36% of New Yorkers have been keeping a bad speech habit under wraps from others? Also, 14% of New York residents are apparently feeling the shame when it comes to mispronouncing words. Don't let it worry you too much because we all stumble over our words sometimes! In fact, I do it all the time.
Here's more, over a quarter (26%) of residents in the Empire State are feeling the burn of using too many filler words. What is New York's favorite filler word? The answer is "Um!" Yep, that little two-letter word seems to be the go-to filler for many New Yorkers.
So, if you find yourself getting caught in a web of "Ums," "Likes," and "Soooos," don't worry - you're not alone. In fact, I do that all the time. If you don't know someone that uses filler words constantly...Um, it is probably you.
