Health Comes First: Spencer Village Now Completely Smoke-Free
Here is some big news from Spencer, New York. The Spencer Village Board passed a 100% smoke-free municipal grounds policy which means that the village is now smoke-free.
The policy got the green light at their last board meeting and will put a stop on any tobacco, cannabis, and vaping products at all village-owned places. That means no more smoking on properties, buildings, ballfields, or play areas.
The Surgeon General of the United States has spoken and has said that there's no safe level of secondhand smoke. There is over 7,000 chemicals in secondhand smoke, including some cancer-causing ones, so the village of Spencer has decided that it's time to say "no thanks" to the smoke clouds hovering around us.
Spencer Village isn't new to being smoke-free because they had a policy already in place that banned regular cigarettes at park grounds. But now, thanks to a collaboration with the Tobacco-Free Broome and Tioga program, the policy has been changed.
The new version now covers everything as they wave goodbye to all tobacco, vaping, and cannabis products on village grounds. Kuddos to the Village of Spencer as they look out for its community and help stop the dangerous effects of second-hand smoke.
It looks like the majority of Tioga County residents are on board with this move, as 65% of them are backing the idea of nixing smoking in outdoor public places. To top it off, the village will get some fresh smoke-free signage courtesy of Tobacco Free Broome and Tioga.
