Binghamton Railroad Bridge Work Will Close Busy Street for Months
Another Binghamton street will be shut down for an extended period while crews fix a crumbling Norfolk Southern railroad bridge.
Concrete from the span over Jarvis Street has been falling onto the sidewalk and roadway, posing a safety concern for pedestrians and motorists.
The rehabilitation project is expected to take more than three months to complete.
Vehicular traffic on Jarvis Street between Clinton and Charlotte streets will be detoured around the work site.
One sidewalk is expected to remain available for people to walk under the bridge between the First Ward and the West Side.
Norfolk Southern has hired Vector Construction of North Dakota to do the repair work. The same company did a similar rehabilitation project last fall at the railroad's bridge over Glenwood Avenue, a short distance to the west of the job now getting underway.
Robert Garrett, the project foreman, was at the Jarvis Street site as workers were setting up equipment for the repair job.
Garrett told WNBF News that columns will be fixed, along with the concrete walls along the bridge. Some sidewalk repairs also are planned.
Garrett said he doesn't know yet exactly how long the job will take to complete, although a City Hall news release suggested the work could be completed by mid-November.
