First Quarter 2025 results have been released for the Broome County Sheriff's Office targeted DWI response according to Sheriff Fred Akshar.

The STOP-DWI program began in January of 2025 in partnership with the Broome County District Attorney's Office. The program funded an extra patrol deputy for targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to Sheriff Akshar's report, over the three-month first quarter, the enforcement deputy, 24 persons were charge with DWI, 119 misdemeanors, 275 vehicle stops, 44 arrests, and 287 tickets issued.

The report shows that DWI charges between all law enforcement agencies have increased by nearly 38% year-over-year for the 1st quarter. In 2024, there were 111 charges, as compared to 145 charges this year (2025.)

Our BCSO Road Patrol does an outstanding job keeping our community safe, but on busy nights, our regular patrols will frequently be responding to consecutive calls throughout their shift, with little time in between for DWI patrol and enforcement. Having an extra set of eyes and wheels specifically going after dangerous drunk and impaired drivers to get them off the road means our families will be safer as they make their way throughout the community. Each of those 24 individuals arrested for DWI over the past few months could very well have ended their own life or the lives of others. Thank you to the Broome County District Attorney’s Office for their partnership and support in funding this additional patrol. - Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar

The Broome County Sheriff's Office notes that this program functions as a financially self-sustaining alcohol and highway safety program. No tax dollars are used; the program is funded from fines paid by convicted drunken drivers.
