Civil Air Patrol Trains for Search and Rescue at Chenango Valley State Park

Members of the Civil Air Patrol from across New York State came together at Chenango Valley State Park in Chenango Forks this past weekend to take part in a large-scale search and rescue training exercise.

Training Led by Experienced New York State Forest Rangers

The weekend exercise was led by New York State Forest Rangers Joan Oldroyd and Anne Staples. As part of the training, Rangers simulated the search for a missing camper from the park’s cabin colony, creating a realistic and challenging scenario for participants.

Cadets and Adult Volunteers Sharpen Search and Rescue Skills

About 60 Civil Air Patrol Cadets, ages 12 and up, along with Adult Volunteers, spent the weekend honing critical skills. The training covered areas such as Ground Team operations, communication techniques, and incident management, ensuring members are prepared for real-world missions.

Expert Guidance Helps Members Prepare for Real-World Missions

“This training helps our members prepare to search for a missing person,” said Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Jensen, the activity director for the event. “The NYS Forest Rangers are experts in the field of search and rescue, and we appreciate being able to learn from them.”

Emergency Communication Mobile Unit Used for the First Time

During the exercise, Civil Air Patrol members also had the opportunity to deploy their new Emergency Communication Mobile Unit (ECMU). Equipped with radio and internet communications technology, the ECMU ensures that teams in the field can stay connected with the Incident Command Post.

Funding Secured with Help from Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo

The ECMU was purchased last year with grant funding secured through the New York State Legislature. Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, who also serves as the commander of Civil Air Patrol’s New York Legislative Squadron, played a key role in obtaining the funding for the important communications tool.
