Dollar General Hauls Out Items From Abandoned Binghamton Store
Dollar General employees have started moving things out of the company's closed location on Main Street in Binghamton
The store opened at the site of a former CVS Pharmacy less than a year ago. But the first problems occurred just weeks later when water flooded most of the retail area after a brief thunderstorm.
The store resumed operations after the mess was cleaned up. But Binghamton code enforcement officials in July declared the place was "condemned as unfit to be occupied." The business was closed after the property was cited for seven violations following an inspection.
There were plans to install a new roof on the building but that apparently did not happen.
Additional trouble developed in January when a water line ruptured, causing additional damage inside and outside the building.
Dollar General corporate representatives late Tuesday confirmed that the company has decided to permanently closed the store at 68 Main Street.
The company's website still listed the store as open, indicating it was still currently operating. But a glimpse inside the darkened building Tuesday revealed the place was cluttered with merchandise and other debris.
Several large garbage containers now have been set up in the store parking lot. Dollar General workers on Tuesday were seen moving shelves out of the building into private vehicles.
Coca-Cola refrigerators were removed from the store and hauled away.
After this story was published, Dollar General sent this statement to WNBF News:

At the conclusion of a thorough assessment, we decided to permanently close the store. We apologize for inconvenience this may cause and welcome them to visit our 4 additional locations in the City.
