Heavy Metal: Massive Steel Beams Installed for Binghamton Bridge
Two very large components of the new railroad bridge being erected in Binghamton have been delivered after a three-hour trek from western New York.
The huge steel beams were transported about 150 miles from the L.C. Whitford Company in Wellsville to the construction site at Front and Clinton streets.
According to the Wellsville Sun, the Binghamton bridge replacement job is a $4.7 million project.
Chan Whitford - a vice president of the family-owned and operated firm - said they were the largest bridge beams in the company's 109-year history.
The first 55-ton beam arrived early Wednesday afternoon and the second beam was delivered about an hour later.
Traffic was halted briefly at the busy intersection for a short time while workers attached cables to the beams. A crane lifted each 114-foot-long segment into place over Front Street.
Preparations for the Norfolk Southern Railway bridge replacement project had been underway for several months.
Sections of the badly-deteriorated old bridge were removed on Monday and Tuesday.
The replacement project has benefited from this week's good weather. If there are no unforeseen snags, the job could be completed on Saturday.
Vehicular and pedestrian traffic is being detoured around the construction site.
