Part of Court Street Building Falls to Sidewalk in Binghamton
A section of sidewalk in downtown Binghamton has been closed after part of a building's parapet wall fell on it.
The city public works department erected barricades in front of the Court Street property on Tuesday.
Deputy Mayor Megan Heiman said the city's code enforcement department checked out the situation after a complaint was received about debris falling from the former CVS Pharmacy building.
Heiman said in an email that an inspection revealed that "a portion of the parapet wall had fallen onto the sidewalk" at 34 Court Street.
The city sent an emergency order and a notice of violation to the building owner. Heiman said the owner must "hire a professional engineer to assess and address the issue."
Online property records indicate the property is owned by CVS Albany LLC.
Amy Thibault, a CVS Pharmacy spokesperson, confirmed the building is still owned by the company. In an email, she said "the property is under contract with another buyer."
The Court Street CVS Pharmacy store ceased operations in November 2021. The closing marked the end of an era - a drug store had been located at that site for 97 years.
In April 2023, a representative of a group based in Washington, DC told Binghamton officials that plans were being developed to convert the building into an apartment complex. That potential project was scrapped.
